Gov. David Patterson issued a directive to NY state agencies this month to recognize gay marriage performed in other states. This ground-breaking move affords same-sex couples 1,324 rights in New York that were previously afforded only to heterosexual couples, such as death benefits, hospital-visitation rights, prescription-drug coverage, income-tax filings, receiving workers’ compensation benefits, and submitting a proxy vote for their partner in an election.
