This week, as part of our bi-monthly Vendor Spotlight, we caught up with Sara Szostak of Sara Lyn Photography.

OurWeddingDay: How did you become involved in photography?

Sara Szostak: I became involved in photography through a friend of mine in high school. She was in a photography class, so we would go take photos of ourselves. I enjoyed it so much that I took photography the next year myself, and it has stuck with me ever since.

OWD: What makes shooting a wedding different from other subjects?

SS: Wedding is different from other types of photography because you have to combine a little bit of photojournalism, commercial photography and fashion photography to get great images. Because weddings are real life events, you can’t pause to light them perfectly so you have learn to work with small amounts of equipment or available light. I started my career in fashion and commercial photography, which makes me want to make everything look absolutely beautiful, but I still have to capture the moment and be able to work on the fly.

OWD: How do you adapt to each bride and groom’s individual photo needs?

SS: I try to customize everything to the bride and groom. I want to get to know them well beforehand. Whether this means having a couple’s dog in their engagement portrait or having a bride lay down on the grass for her bridal portrait, I want be able to bring them shots that they will love and will express who they are! I think the biggest key is to get to know the bride and groom before the ceremony so that there are no surprises on the big day.

You and your fiancĂ© should both play an active role in planning your wedding photos and choosing your photographer. Make a list of special shots that you would like to have taken, and consider tones, black and white vs. color, and any effects you may be interested in. Don’t let you man be a lazy dog about it!
